Alaska is a beautiful American state to the west of Canada that has prospered in a beautiful, rugged landscape rich in petroleum and seafood. Well known for its pristine mountains, sparkling lakes or glaciers, Alaska is a favourite for tourists at all times of the year. The U.S. purchased Alaska from Imperial Russia on April 9th, 1867 for the sum of US$7,200,000. Seward’s day is a festival celebrated each year in honour of this event.
Alaska is well known for its world class ecotourism. With a total population of only 660,000, Alaska’s pristine natural environment is unparalleled. However, being an environment of extremes, temperatures range from 60-70°F in the summer to as low as -50°F in the winter.
The capital is Juneau and the largest city is Anchorage with a quarter of a million people. Tommy Moe (alpine skier), Curt Shilling (baseball player), Jewel Kilcher (Recording artist) and Susan Butcher (dog musher) all came from Alaska.
